New Regulations on NIE Number Applications as from July 1, 2011

A new regulation has been issued in the National Bulletin of State in Spain (BOE), establishing that as from the 1st of July of 2011, NIE applications must be filed personally by the applicant at the corresponding police station.  In the event the applicant is out of Spain, the application for a NIE number must be submitted (in person) to the closest Spanish Embassy or Consulate.

This new regulation concerning NIE number applications can be found in Article 206 of the Royal Decree 557/2011.

In certain parts of Spain, the new  regulations  on  NIE  number  applications   has not been applied as of today’s date and, as a result, some lawyers in Spain continue offering a service to obtain a NIE number for their clients.

The NIE Number application fee payable on every new application is 9.18 €.

The fee on new NIE applications must be paid at your local bank branch office using a Form 790 (Modelo 790) form which can be collected from the police station to which you intend applying for your NIE number.

You should note that you must have an NIE number for any purchase of property in Spain!

Finally, if you need a NIE application form then do feel free to contact me as I can send you a copy – which will save you queuing up for a copy before having to go to your bank and paying the fee…
